A few 2004 optional features become standard for 2005 in BMW’s most popular lineup. Sedans and wagons wear an “i” suffix, coupes and convertibles a “Ci.” All have an inline 6 cylinder engine. The 325 models have a 2.5-liter, 330 models a 3.0, and the top-line M3 versions a high-power 3.2. The 325xi and 330xi have all-wheel drive. Other models have rear-wheel drive. The standard transmission is a 5-speed manual on 325s, a 6-speed manual on the others. A 5-speed automatic is optional on 325s and 330s. Previously optional on all models, a 6-speed sequential manual transmission is now offered only on M3s and rear-wheel-drive 330s. Essentially a clutchless manual operated via console lever or steering-wheel paddles, the sequential manual can also be set to shift like an automatic.
All 3-Series have antiskid/traction control and front torso side airbags. Rear side airbags are optional. All but convertibles have front head-protecting tubular side airbags. For 2005, the 325Ci convertible joins the 330Ci and M3 in having a standard power top with a heated glass rear window. Also for 2005, sedans and coupes (except M3) get a standard sunroof, and coupes and convertibles join the M3 in getting a standard tire-pressure monitor. Bi-xenon headlights are optional for all 3-Series; on the 330Ci and 325Ci, the option includes steering-linked headlights. Run-flat tires are optional for 330s. An available Performance Package for 330s includes more power, 18-inch wheels in place of 17-inch wheels, unique trim, and sport suspension and exhaust tuning. Available on all 3-Series models is BMW Assist emergency and concierge service.
Minor equipment shuffling marks 2005 for BMW’s 5-Series sedans. Three models are offered. The BMW 525i has a 184-hp 2.5-liter inline 6 cylinder engine, the BMW 530i a 225-hp 3.0 inline 6. The BMW 545i has a 325-hp 4.4-liter V8. For 2005, the BMW 545i joins the other two models in offering a standard 6-speed manual transmission. A 6-speed automatic is optional on all. Optional on the BMW 530i and BMW 545i is a 6-speed sequential manual transmission. SMT is essentially a clutchless manual operated via console lever or steering-wheel paddles; it can also be set to shift like an automatic.
Standard on all models are ABS, antiskid/traction control, front side airbags, and front and rear head-protecting tubular side airbags. Rear torso side airbags are optional. Also standard are BMW Assist emergency and concierge service and a tire-pressure monitor. All models have BMW’s iDrive, which uses a console “joystick” knob to control entertainment, navigation, communication, and climate functions. The BMW 525i has 16-inch wheels, the others 17-inch wheels. Optional are a sport suspension teamed with run-flat tires, BMW’s Active Roll Stabilization designed to counteract body lean, and BMW’s Active Steering that electronically varies steering ratio and assist. Other options include head-up instrument display, satellite radio, and adaptive cruise control designed to maintain a set following distance. Also available are a navigation system, front and rear obstacle detection, heated front and rear seats, and xenon headlights.
More standard features highlight the 2005 model for BMW’s 4-seat coupe and convertible. Both BMW 6-Series versions use a 325-hp V8 with a choice of three 6-speed transmissions: an automatic, a conventional manual, and BMW’s sequential manual. The SMT is a clutchless manual operated via console lever or steering-wheel paddles; it can be set to shift like an automatic. ABS and antiskid/traction control are standard, as is BMW’s Active Roll Stabilization to counteract body lean. Also standard is BMW’s Dynamic Drive Control that firms suspension, quickens throttle response, and adjusts shift points on the automatic transmission and SMT. BMW’s Active Steering option varies steering ratio and assist. Front torso side airbags and front knee airbags are standard; the coupe adds front head-protecting tubular side airbags. The convertible has a power soft top. Its heated glass rear window lowers for roof-up ventilation or raises to deflect top-down cabin drafts. Standard equipment includes leather and metal interior trim; navigation system; steering-linked headlights; and BMW’s iDrive that uses a console “joystick” to adjust major climate, audio, and navigation functions. Newly standard is front and rear obstacle detection. Optional is adaptive cruise control designed to maintain a set distance from traffic ahead. Other options include 19-inch wheels vs. standard 18-inch wheels, and a head-up instrument display.
The BMW 7-Series adds and optional rear DVD entertainment and keyless access. The BMW flagship comes in two body lengths. The Li models have a 5.5-inch-longer wheelbase and body than i models. The BMW 745i and BMW BMW 745Li have a V8 engine. The BMW 760i and BMW 760Li have a V12. All use a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift control via steering-wheel buttons. Standard features include ABS, antiskid/traction control, and BMW’s Active Roll Stabilization designed to counteract body lean. Standard on BMW 760s and optional on BMW 745s is an Adaptive Ride Package with automatically adjusting shock absorbers and rear self-leveling suspension. V8s come with 18-inch wheels, the BMW 760Li and V8 Sport Package with 19-inch wheels. The BMW 760i comes with 20-inch wheels.
Front knee airbags, front torso side airbags, and front and rear head-protecting tubular side airbags are standard. Rear torso side airbags are optional. All BMW 7s have BMW’s iDrive, which controls the audio, navigation, phone, and climate functions via a console “joystick” knob and displays the settings on a dashboard screen. Conventional switches are also provided for basic audio and climate adjustments. BMW Assist emergency and concierge service is standard. Newly standard for 2005 are steering-linked headlights and front and rear obstacle detection. Ventilated front seats are standard on all but the BMW 745i, where they’re optional. Ventilated rear seats are standard on BMW 760Li, optional on BMW 745Li. The new Comfort Access allows keyless access without removing the keyfob from pocket or purse.
2005 has some previously optional features becoming standard on BMW’s American-built SUV. The BMW X5 comes in three models: the 3.0i with a 225-hp 6 cylinder, the 4.4i with a 315-hp V8, and the 4.8is with a 355-hp V8. BMW X5s have all-wheel drive without low-range gearing, ABS, antiskid/traction control, front torso side airbags, and front and rear head-protecting tubular side airbags. Rear torso side airbags are optional. The 3.0i comes with a 6-speed manual transmission or optional 5-speed automatic. V8s come with a 6-speed automatic. Automatics have a manual shift gate. The 3.0i comes with 17-inch wheels; 18-inch wheels are available in its optional Sport Package. The 4.4i has standard 18-inch wheels, with 19-inch wheels available in tandem with its Sport Package. Both Sport Packages include firmer suspension tuning. The 4.8is comes with the Sport Package suspension and 20-inch wheels. Standard on V8s and optional on the 3.0i are automatic-leveling rear suspension and leather upholstery. Newly standard for 3.0i is automatic climate control. Newly standard for 4.4i is front and rear obstacle detection, which is optional on 3.0i. Xenon headlights, standard on V8s and optional on the 3.0i, are now steering linked. Other available features include adjustable ride-height suspension, heated rear seats, navigation system, and BMW Assist emergency and concierge system.
BMW’s 2-seat sports car adds some standard features for 2005 and removes a transmission option on its base model. The BMW Z4 is a convertible with a manual soft top or optional power soft top; both have a heated glass rear window. Two models are offered, both with an inline 6 cylinder engine. The BMW Z4 2.5i has a 184-hp 2.5-liter, the BMW Z4 3.0i has a 225-hp 3.0. Manual transmission is standard, a 5-speed on the 2.5i, a 6-speed on the 3.0i. A 5-speed automatic with manual shift gate is optional on both. BMW’s Sequential Manual Gearbox is optional on the 3.0i and no longer offered on the 2.5i. This 6-speed sequential manual transmission (SMT) has no clutch pedal, shifts via the gear lever or steering-wheel paddles, and can be set to shift like an automatic. All BMW Z4s have run-flat tires, ABS, and an antiskid system. The 2.5i comes with 16-inch wheels, the 3.0i with 17-inch wheels. An optional Sport Package includes a sport suspension and 17-inch wheels for the 2.5i, 18s for the 3.0i. It also adds Dynamic Driving Control in which a console button quickens throttle action and reduces power-steering assist. Leather upholstery is standard on the 3.0i, optional on the 2.5i. Newly standard for 2005 are fog lamps and cruise control for the 2.5i, and automatic climate control for the 3.0. Heated seats, xenon headlights, a navigation system, and BMW Assist emergency and concierge service are optional. A removable hardtop and a wind deflector are dealer options.
