Mercedes-Benz is preparing a ground-up redesign of its compact C-Class model line, beginning with an all-new sedan that’s due to arrive in Europe in spring 2007. The car is expected to go on sale at U.S. dealers later in the year as a 2008 model.

“The two-door Chevrolet Blazer from General Motors Corp. has the highest driver death rate of any passenger vehicle on U.S. roadways, a research group with links to the insurance industry said Tuesday.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety based that conclusion, and its embarrassing result for the world’s largest automaker, on an extensive study of passenger vehicles from the 1999-2002 model years.”

Having a pickup truck in our fleet means it’ll inevitably see hauling duty. During the past few months, several staffers have put it to the test, which makes us wonder: Why do manufacturers still offer pickup trucks with neither a plastic or spray-in bed liner as standard equipment? If the scratches in our Ford’s bed were the marks left from past battles, it’s been in a war. It looks about 20 years older than the rest of the truck. Bed aside, the rest of this well-used work machine looks as fresh as the day it left the factory, including its much-praised, upscale interior.
